Linda Linda Linda

Linda Linda Linda

Nobuhiro Yamashita (2005)

This movie belongs to the category of things I would probably never have watched had it not been recommended to me. The IMDB synopsis presents it as a movie about a group of high school girls who must practice for an upcoming concert. That is an accurate description of the movie, which is part of why Linda Linda Linda did not work much for me.

There are roughly two kinds of high school movies out there. The first one generally belongs to the romcom genre and is a happy pot-pourri of high school stereotypes going about being funny and striking up the occasional romantic attachment. The other kind tends to be more serious and delves more into the psychologies of characters who, when done right, seem like actual people.

Linda Linda Linda belongs to the second category and I have a problem with that. High school romcoms are easy entertainment, even if they seldom have anything to offer in the intellectual department. But movies who take high school seriously are hard for me because I cannot take high school seriously.

The characters in the movie have problems they must deal with and there is one looming stake looming over the movie : they must be ready in time for the concert. I cannot care about any of it. The four girls who make up the band are preoccupied with petty fights, trivial dalliances and a musical performance that will have no incidence whatsoever on anything.

I have nothing specific to blame the movie for except for the fact that it is outside of my wheelhouse. It is competently shot, although unimpressively, and aptly paced and edited. I simply get nothing out of it.

5/10 – Unremarkable
